The air that is sent over to the aeration basin by the blowers has multiple functionality. Its primary function is to supply the oxygen that is required for processing the organic compounds in waste water. “BOD5” i.e., biochemical oxygen demand, which is another name of organic compounds is termed as for having done the 5-days trial to measure the concentration of all compounds. Entire oxygen must be liquefied in this waste water, so that microorganisms can use it appropriately. Also, the diffusers use small air bubbles in order to efficiently liquefy the oxygen into waste water. When these microorganism convert NH3 (ammonia) into NO3 (nitrate), it requires extra oxygen; which is also known as nitrification and it represents only half the entire process that is oxygen requires.

Mixed liquor is made up using waste water and sludge in the aeration basin. Sludge suspension is maintained in this mixed liquor by the air that is supplied by the blowers that create upheaval. Further, the mixing process also keeps entire aeration basin content consistent. At various plants, mixing limitations instead of oxygen demand is used to get the minimum air flow rate. Moreover, mixing air flow has a regular value of 0.12 SCFM per square foot for the aeration basin plan area.

Physical damage is mostly prevented through the diffusers, since they have an upper limit on air flow rate. Also, their maximum flow differs as per the diffusers design.
